Sara Samir: The Weightlifting Star Who Conquered Olympic Podiums
From Ismailia to the world stage, Samir's journey began at just 11 years old. Here are her biggest milestones.
Milestones in the Life of Egyptian Weightlifter Sara Samir
Sara Samir's story begins at the age of 11, within the walls of the Military Institution Club in Ismailia, where she carried outsized dreams. A native of the city of Suez Canal city, Samir went on to become a formidable force in the history of Arab weightlifting. She battled some of the sport's toughest competitors—and faced an even greater challenge outside the arena when confronted with suspension and absence.
But, as champions do, Samir returned to prove that defeat is merely a fleeting stop on the road to greatness, turning every challenge she faced into fuel for a hard-earned Olympic silver medal in Paris.
The Journey of 'Ismailia’s Daughter'
At just 14 years old, Samir competed in the 2012 African Youth Championship in Tunisia, winning gold in the 63 kg category. Later, she claimed gold at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, in 2014, lifting a total of 228 kg in the 63 kg category.
In 2015, she secured three gold medals at the World Youth Championships in Poland and was named Best Female Lifter of the tournament by the International Federation. That same year, she placed fifth at the Senior World Championships in Houston, USA.
Olympic Bronze
At the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Sara Samir won the bronze medal in the 69 kg category, becoming the first Arab woman in history to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting.
After the Olympics
In 2017, she won gold in the clean and jerk but failed all three attempts in the snatch at the World Championships. In 2018, she secured a silver medal at the World Championships.
Suspension
Samir was suspended for two years after six members of the Egyptian delegation tested positive for doping at the 2019 African Games. She returned to competing in October 2022.
The Comeback
In 2022, she won three gold medals (snatch, clean and jerk, and total) in Colombia, repeating the achievement at the 2023 World Championships in Riyadh. In May 2023, she claimed her third senior continental title at the African Championships.
Olympic Silver
Samir carried Egypt’s flag during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics alongside pentathlete Ahmed El-Gendy. The Paris Olympics would go on to be where she finally realized her dreams, winning the silver medal in the 81 kg weightlifting category, and finishing behind the gold medalist from Norway.
